Life story
Giuseppe Marello was born on 26 December 1844 in Turin but spent his childhood at San Martino Alfieri, near Asti. He was ordained a priest on 19 September 1868. He then served the diocese of Asti, first as secretary to the bishop and later as chancellor.
On 14 March 1878 he founded the Oblates of Saint Joseph. On 11 February 1889 Pope Leo XIII appointed him bishop of Acqui, and he was consecrated in Rome on 17 February 1889. The appointment came when he was forty-four years old.
He died in Savona on 30 May 1895, according to one source of a cerebral haemorrhage. His pastoral life had been closely tied to the diocese of Asti before he was sent to Acqui. Pope John Paul II beatified him at Asti on 26 September 1993 and canonized him on 25 November 2001. The miracle recognized for the canonization concerned the recovery of two children, Alfredo and Isilia Chávez León.
