Life story
Irenaeus was born around 130 in the region of Smyrna in Asia Minor. As a young man he heard Bishop Polycarp preach and remembered it for the rest of his life. Later he moved to Gaul and served as a priest in Lyon. In 177 the Lyon community suffered a severe persecution in which Bishop Pothinus died in prison. Irenaeus was away in Rome carrying a letter from the believers there, so he escaped. On his return he was chosen as bishop to replace Pothinus.
As bishop he wrote Against Heresies, a work in five books aimed at the Gnostics, a movement teaching that salvation comes through secret knowledge. In reply he stressed that the Church's faith was handed down through the bishops who succeeded the apostles, and he listed the early bishops of Rome. He also wrote the Demonstration of the Apostolic Preaching, rediscovered in an Armenian translation in the early twentieth century.
When Pope Victor considered excommunicating the churches of Asia for keeping Easter on a different day, Irenaeus wrote to urge him to keep the peace. He died around 202. The account of his martyrdom appears only later and is uncertain. The Catholic Church keeps his feast on 28 June. In 2022 Pope Francis declared him a Doctor of the Church. Because he knew teachers who linked him to the apostolic age, and because he wrote in Greek while living in Gaul, he is often seen as a bridge between the Eastern and Western Churches.
