Life story

Anno Sjoerd Brandsma was born on 23 February 1881 at Bolsward in Friesland, the Netherlands, to a Catholic farming family. He entered the Carmelite Order under the name Titus, was ordained a priest in 1905 and studied philosophy in Rome. From 1923 he taught philosophy and the history of mysticism at the Catholic University of Nijmegen, and for a time served as its rector. He also wrote books, lectured widely and acted as spiritual adviser to Dutch Catholic journalists.

After Germany occupied the Netherlands in 1940, he opposed the demand that Catholic newspapers carry Nazi propaganda. In early 1942 he visited editorial offices to urge them not to comply. On 19 January 1942 he was arrested. He was held at Scheveningen and Amersfoort and was moved to the camp at Dachau in June 1942. His health collapsed quickly under forced labour, hunger and mistreatment.

He died on 26 July 1942 at Dachau, by lethal injection, at the age of sixty-one. He was beatified in 1985 and canonised by Pope Francis on 15 May 2022. He is remembered as a teacher, a writer and a witness for freedom of the press against dictatorship.

Before his arrest he had written and lectured extensively on Dutch mysticism and on the history of religious orders. While in prison he wrote some prayers and a short life of Saint Teresa of Jesus on scraps of paper. A nurse at Dachau who cared for him later gave testimony about his last days.
