Life story
Pauline Marie Jaricot was born on 22 July 1799 in Lyon, France. In 1822 she founded an organisation to support missionary work around the world, the Society for the Propagation of the Faith. In 1922 Pope Pius XI declared it Pontifical.
In 1826 she founded the Association of the Living Rosary, in which the fifteen decades of the rosary were divided among fifteen members; Pope Gregory XVI gave it canonical approval in 1832. She later put her fortune and her trust into a business venture, but dishonest managers defrauded her and left her in debt.
She spent her last years in poverty. She died in Lyon on 9 January 1862. A miracle attributed to her intercession was recognised on 26 May 2020, and she was beatified on 22 May 2022 at Eurexpo in Lyon, in a ceremony presided over by Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle on behalf of Pope Francis. Her feast is 9 January.
