Life story
He was born on 10 November 1851 in Jalmolonga, an hacienda in Malinalco, State of México, Mexico. He was ordained a priest on 24 August 1879, at the age of 27, and later founded the Shelter of the Sacred Heart and a religious congregation.
The congregation he founded, the Servants of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and of the Poor, grew out of “The Shelter of the Sacred Heart”, which opened on 13 December 1885.
He died on 20 September 1904 in Puebla de los Ángeles, of a stomach ulcer. Pope John Paul II beatified him on 6 May 1990 at the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City and canonised him on 21 May 2000 in St Peter's Square. His feast is 20 September, the day of his death. The Shelter of the Sacred Heart opened nearly two decades before his death; His relics are kept at the central house of the congregation in Puebla. He was 52 when he died.
