Life story
Ivan Merz was born on 16 December 1896 in Banja Luka, then part of Austria-Hungary. From October 1920 he studied at the Sorbonne and the Institut Catholique in Paris. In 1923 he took a doctorate in philosophy at the University of Zagreb, with a dissertation on liturgical language in French writers, especially those of the Catholic revival.
He went on to teach French and German at the archdiocesan classical gymnasium in Zagreb. He founded the League of Young Croatian Catholics and, with Ivo Protulipac, co-founded the Croatian Union of the Eagles (Hrvatski orlovski savez), inspired by the Eucharistic Crusade he had seen in France. He wrote articles and essays for several magazines and became a leading promoter of liturgical renewal in Croatia.
He died in Zagreb on 10 May 1928, aged 31. His remains lie in the Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in Zagreb. Pope John Paul II beatified him at Banja Luka on 22 June 2003, and the Church remembers him on 10 May, the day of his death.
