Life story

Aniela Salawa was born on 9 September 1881 in Siepraw, near Kraków, into a poor but devout farming family. She had only two years of schooling, enough to read and write. In late 1897, aged 16, she went to Kraków to work as a domestic servant, a job she kept for about twenty years in various households.

She wished to enter a convent but was refused because of her poor health and lack of a dowry. In 1900 she joined the St Zyta Association of Catholic Servants. On 15 May 1912 she entered the Third Order of St Francis, and on 6 August 1913 she was professed as a tertiary.

During the First World War she visited wounded soldiers in military hospitals in Kraków, bringing them food and encouragement, and she shared her scanty rations with the city's poorest people. Overwork and poor nutrition wore down her health.

In her last years she lived in extreme poverty and illness in a tiny basement room, and many people avoided her for fear of contagion. Four days before her death she was taken to a hospital. She died on 12 March 1922 in Kraków. Her remains rest in the Basilica of St Francis in Kraków. Pope John Paul II recognised her heroic virtue in 1987 and beatified her on 13 August 1991. She has not been canonised; her feast is 12 March.
