Life story

Pedro Calungsod was born around 1654 in the Visayas region of the Philippines; the surviving records do not state his birthplace clearly. He was educated by Jesuits and worked as a catechist, a layperson who helps priests teach the faith. While still very young, around fourteen according to the accounts, he was chosen to join Father Diego Luis de San Vitores in his mission to the Mariana Islands. The Jesuits had been active in the Visayas since the sixteenth century, and young catechists often assisted them with teaching in the local languages.

In 1668 he arrived on Guam with the mission party. He helped teach catechism, build chapels and prepare for meetings with the Chamorro people. The mission met many difficulties, as some Chamorro were resentful and a rumour spread that baptismal water caused death. Pedro was among the young Filipino catechists who travelled with the party, and he learned some of the local language and worked on the mission in the face of food shortages and tensions.

On 2 April 1672, in the village of Tumon, Father San Vitores baptised an infant against the wishes of the child's father, Matapang. According to later testimonies, Matapang and another man killed San Vitores and Pedro Calungsod, who did not abandon the priest even though he had a chance to flee. He was speared and struck with a blade. San Vitores was beatified in 1985.

John Paul II beatified him on 5 March 2000 and Benedict XVI canonised him on 21 October 2012. He is among the youngest saints of the Church. In the Philippines he is honoured as a model for young people.
