Life story

Brendan was born around 484, traditionally near Tralee in County Kerry, Ireland. He was taught by monastic masters such as Ita and Erc and then took up the religious life. During his life he founded a number of monasteries, above all Clonfert in Galway, which later became an important centre of monastic life and learning in Ireland.

His name is best known through the Navigatio Sancti Brendani Abbatis, a Latin tale of a seven-year sea voyage with his companions in search of the Promised Land of the Saints. The earliest surviving manuscript dates from around 900, centuries after his death. The tale contains many marvels, such as islands inhabited by sea monsters, and is regarded as literature and legend rather than a reliable chronicle. He may well have made real sea journeys, as Irish tradition tells of monks travelling by boat, but there is no firm proof.

In later life Brendan founded a monastery at Annaghdown in County Galway, where his sister Briga oversaw a community of nuns. According to tradition he died there around 577 while visiting her, and was buried at Clonfert. He is honoured as patron of the dioceses of Kerry and Clonfert and of seafarers. The Church keeps his feast on 16 May. Medieval versions of the voyage story were translated into many European languages, and it became one of the most widely read tales of the period. Modern attempts to trace the route remain speculation.
